Eight home improvement projects that cost less than $50

home improvement under $50.jpgWhen most people think about home improvement they imagine huge, costly projects. But not every home improvement project has to break the bank and stress you out for weeks. There are plenty of minor home improvements that you can do in an hour or so for under $50. Here are eight of them.

1. Updating kitchen hardware. A quick trip to your local home improvement store and an hour or so spent in your kitchen with a screwdriver is all you need to do this project. If you want a new look in the kitchen but don’t want to spend time or money to do something major, simply swapping out the cabinet hardware can make quite a difference. Make sure to bring a piece of the current hardware to compare the new hardware to so you’re not leaving any visible hole or unpainted area on the cabinets.

2. Repaint a room. You can’t imagine the different a fresh coat of paint can make in a room until you’ve repainted it. A can of paint, some brushes, and some plastic to protect the things in the room you don’t want painted is all you need for this project.

3. Install task lighting. Is there a space in your kitchen where you’d prefer to have a little more light without turning on the main overhead lights? You can buy a portable LED light for a few bucks. Simply plug it in (or not if it’s battery powered) and tuck it up out of sight (perhaps on the underside) of a cabinet that’s above the counter you want to illuminate and you have task lighting.

4. Add molding. You can add some molding to a wall, door, or cupboard or you can add it around a window. This is an inexpensive and quick way to make a room look a little more refined.

5. Stain or paint your front porch railing. If you’ve got a wood railing on your front porch, the chances are the weather has worn it down over time. Perhaps the paint is peeling. You can strip the paint and stain the railing a new color or you can simply repaint it. It will make your front porch look a lot more welcoming.

6. Swap out house numbers. If your home is like most homes, the numbers on the front porch are too small to see clearly from the road, especially in the dark. Even if they are large enough they’ve probably lost their shine. So head to your local home improvement store and pick up new house numbers that are large and bright. It will only cost you a few bucks and you can swap the numbers yourself with a little bit of glue and a few minutes’ time.

7. Get a new mailbox. While you’re working on your home’s exterior, you may as well replace your mailbox. If you don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing it, you can simply repaint the post.

8. Plant some flowers. Adding a few flowers around your new mailbox or along the walkway leading to your house is another inexpensive project that won’t take long but will make a huge difference.
