Tips for incorporating black into your interior design

Though black is a tried-and-true timeless color (okay so it’s technically not a color but for the purposes of interior design, it is) many homeowners are apprehensive about incorporating it into their design scheme. Black can be over powering if used too much but it has its advantages as well. It’s a classy color and it goes with everything. If you’d like to incorporate some black in your home’s interior design but are unsure about how, here are some tips you might try.

Variations of black

Believe it or not, the color black has variations. There can be undertones of other colors. As with all colors, you have a spectrum from matte to high-gloss. Keep in mind that smoother, shinier surfaces that are black will display every single fingerprint and speck of dust so it will be higher maintenance. If you’ve got children or pets, you may want to opt for rougher textures and duller color, especially where the color black is involved.

Offset black with warm colors

Opt for golds and bronzes rather than silvers and chromes in a space that has a lot of black elements. The warmer metals do a better job of offsetting the black which can be overwhelming. It’s important to remember that black is a very bold color for interior design and you don’t have to use very much of it to make a big statement.

Before you spend a lot on black leather sofas or other larger items, you might want to incorporate black into your accessories and smaller pieces that can be swapped out more easily. When you’re more experience and comfortable in using black in your interior design you might be a little more adventurous by investing in some larger pieces.

Pair black with white

It’s fitting that the absence of color and the full spectrum of colors would be the perfect pair. White and black make a great pairing so if you don’t want to overdo the black, purchase home décor items that make use of black and white patterns. Of course they’re zebra print but if you find that tacky there are some modern geometric black and white prints that look great as well.

Black on a budget

You can incorporate black into your interior design without spending a lot of money. A black lampshade (with gold trim of course) is a fairly inexpensive way to add a splash of black into a space. You’ll want to have several smaller pieces that are black if the focal point of the room incorporates black as well otherwise you’ll have a black hole effect that swallows up everything else in the space.

Baseboard heater covers tend to be white or chrome. You can purchase new baseboard heater covers and paint them black to create a dramatic look without spending much time or money.
