How-to for Decorating your Mom Cave

Mom Cave 1.jpg

Your home is your sanctuary, and it should be a place you are able to relax and enjoy yourself. But once you have a family, that relaxation time seems to go away, and the house becomes a place for the whole family instead of just you. It is especially hard as a mom because kids often feel like they need to be with you all the time, even when they are older. It can be very hard to find a place of your own that is comfortable and relaxing. Now, to fight that problem, there is the Mom Cave.

It used to be only dads got a place in the house that was just for them, but times have changed. Women realized how important it is to have a place of their own as well. And whether this is a room in the house or a “she-shed” out back, it is definitely something you want. Decorating it right will make you feel more at home.

Find a space

Finding a place where you can have your mom cave is the first step to creating your oasis. Pick the room in your home or the shed out back that will make you feel most comfortable. You probably don’t need a huge space if it is a place that is just for you to spend time alone, but if you plan to invite your friends into it, you may want something bigger than a closet. After you’ve picked the room you want, you’ll want to get it ready by cleaning everything in there, putting on baseboard radiator covers, and putting up a fresh coat of paint. Usually, neutral paint colors are a good choice, but you may want something bolder depending on your theme.

Pick your theme

The theme of your space will be a big determining factor in choosing the furniture and decorations for the space. You can choose to be very girly, have it centered on a particular activity you like doing (such as reading, sewing, video gaming), or you may even just want to make it peaceful and serene. The LA Times reports on a girl who wanted her theme to be related to a garden, as she made a she-shed where she could spend time. The goal was to make it flow beautifully with the garden. Whatever you choose, pick something that speaks to you and will make it a space you want to spend time in alone.

Pick large pieces of furniture

Since you may be working with a limited space, picking your big furniture first will help you define the area. Do you need seating for one or seating for a group of friends? Do you need bookshelves in there or an entertainment center? Decide what you want to do in that space, so you know what functional pieces need to go in first.

The decor

The decor is where your theme will really come into play. You could pick a rug so comfortable you can snuggle up on it with a good book, or you can choose to get a rug that fits a particular style. Choose a coffee table or side table that matches your theme and is functional in design. Put art on the walls that feels comfortable and safe. These are the final touches that will really make your space personal for you, so it is important you only pick things you like.

The most important thing to remember when creating your mom cave is that it is a place where you can be selfish. Don’t get caught up in worrying about someone else and whether or not they will like the space. Just do what you like, and you’ll be happy with the result.
