Redecorating? Don’t Forget About Your Bedroom

bedroom decorating 1

When homeowners redecorate or remodel, the kitchen, bathrooms, and front room get all the love. It’s understandable, these are the rooms that guests are most likely to see. The kitchen needs to remain modern and functional and it’s the heart of any home. Bathrooms need to be refreshed from time to time and the front room is where you’ll entertain guests or spend time together as a family. Bedrooms are the rooms most likely to be ignored which is too bad since that’s where most people spend the majority of their time when inside their own home. So if you’re getting ready to invest some money into improving your home’s interior, here are some projects to consider for your bedroom.

Make it a place that’s for more than just sleeping

Since all of these tips are centered around making your bedroom a place you’ll want to spend more time, you need to make a place where you can do more than just sleep. If reading is one of your favorite pastimes, for instance, you can carve out a space in your bedroom for a reading nook. Even if you like to read in bed already it’s a good idea to have a dedicated space for daytime reading. If a reading nook isn’t your thing, consider setting aside part of your bedroom for a mini home office. At the very least, a tiny computer desk with a laptop or desktop computer. This frees up a bedroom that you’d otherwise have to use as a home office.

Make use of vertical space

You can make your bedroom look a lot bigger by utilizing its vertical space more. Think floor-to-ceiling window treatments or perhaps a floor-to-ceiling headboard. Other options include tall bookcases or a wardrobe. Oversized mirrors, artwork, or photographs can also be used to make use of more of the vertical space which tricks the eye into seeing the room as being larger than it really is.

Think carefully about layout

Even if you’re not really into feng shui you can’t deny that the layout of the major pieces in your bedroom matter. Simply rearranging the furniture can drastically change the look. Some good rules of thumb are to make sure there’s balance for both sides of the bedroom. So choose to have two nightstands or end tables instead of one. Instead of just a lamp on one side of the bed, have two. Also make sure your bed doesn’t directly face a window or door.

Splurge a little

As mentioned above, don’t be afraid to set aside more of your decorating budget for the bedroom for once. Upgrade to a high-quality mattress. Invest in a chandelier instead of a simple light fixture. Get expensive bedding such as silk sheets or a nice down comforter. Gold or silver accents are a nice touch as well.

Make it modern

Finally, there’s something about a sleek, modern look that makes you want to spend more time in your bedroom. Metallic finishes, straight lines, and bold colors—especially shades of brown—are all great ways to do this. Snap-on baseboard radiator covers are a great way to add a touch of modern to an older-looking baseboard heater system.
